Post Box Theft & Identity Fraud

POST BOX THEFTS AND IDENTITY FRAUD

It has come to our attention that one of our valued customers has been subject to Post Box theft and identity fraud.

We would like to highlight this security breach to ensure this doesn’t happen to you.

Post boxes that are separate from the family home and front door are indeed at risk. Post may be intercepted fraudulently and victims often don’t realised they have been targeted. Post containing personal and financial information can be stolen and documents used to apply for credit cards, loans and or even bank account pin numbers.

Our advice to homeowners who have external post boxes is to check if it is possible to remove mail from inside, without difficulty, and if so consider immediate changes. If you can put your hand in, so can a thief!

These are some suggested measures to make your post box more secure:

Ensure your post box is made of robust material and is tamper proof. It should have a secure locking mechanism and ideally a security key.

Incidents where the post box is being taken from the property in its entirety have occurred, so make sure  it cannot be stolen.

The post box should be fitted with a strong internal restrictor, to stop items being removed from inside.

Keep a look out for expected post, if for instance you are expecting a new bank card, statement or pin.

Don’t leave mail uncollected for long periods of time; ideally check your post box every day, better still check it morning or night if you are working and miss the postman.

If you suspect you mail has been stolen or you have received bills and invoices / receipts from companies you haven’t dealt with, contact the Royal Mail immediately and inform your local Police.
